As a vital player in the world economy, freight forwarding has undergone significant changes and unique challenges in recent years, including fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic, international conflict, and increasing environmental regulations. These developments have had a profound impact on the shipping industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

We asked the members of the Sheltered International team their impressions on the current state of the shipping industry and possibilities for the future. Read on as we explore the key developments that are shaping the industry and what it all means for businesses, consumers, and the wider global economy.<\/span>[\/vc_wp_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″ el_class=”left_cont”][vc_custom_heading text=”Have Shipping Profits Peaked?” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Raleway%3A100%2C200%2C300%2Cregular%2C500%2C600%2C700%2C800%2C900|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_wp_text]Shipping profits exceeded all projections in 2022. Companies took this windfall and invested<\/a><\/span>\u00a0it in improved infrastructure and expanding their air and sea fleets. Profits are now returning to pre-COVID level and \u201ccarriers are hungry for business again,\u201d says Andrew Ciccarone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Derick Mullikin, in charge of Import Operations at Sheltered International, notes \u201cshipping profits peaked during the middle to end of last year. I don\u2019t foresee a rise as many companies increased their imports last year and are now sitting on warehouses full of products. With the cost of living increasing, many consumers aren\u2019t buying what isn\u2019t necessary. In the long run, this could end up hurting many companies as they sit on products that aren\u2019t being sold.\u201d \u201cThat should help bring transportation costs down for consumers,\u201d adds Will Moseley, an expert on our team in international freight forwarding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Import Specialist Kim Cummiskey believes shipping costs seemed \u201cto have reached a bottom. Warehouses have been overstocked<\/a><\/span> reducing the demand on freight, but as the stocks deplete and replenishments are needed, the freight costs will rise again.\u201d Operations Manager Michele Rockwell <\/a><\/span>agrees, \u201cshipping costs will rise as demand increases\u201d throughout the year. It won\u2019t be a surprise if Q3 profits rise to meet the demand for the holiday season.<\/span>[\/vc_wp_text][vc_custom_heading text=”How Will International Relations Affect Trade?” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Raleway%3A100%2C200%2C300%2Cregular%2C500%2C600%2C700%2C800%2C900|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”5515″ img_size=”3992×2242″ el_class=”blog_detail_img”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_wp_text]Few industries are as dependent on international partnership as shipping and trade. Everything from tariffs <\/a><\/span>imposed on China to Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine has an effect on the end price of consumer goods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States relationship with China will cause a detrimental effect on trade between the two nations,\u201d says Derick Mullikin. \u201cThe Section 301 <\/a><\/span>tariffs could add 7.5% to 25% additional duty. The U.S. could very likely add additional sanctions on China, and vice versa.\u201d Andrew Ciccarone has noticed \u201cclients are diversifying their supply chains out of China. [We\u2019ve seen] near-shoring in Mexico, for example. We see a lot of garments moving to India and Bangladesh, some are moving back to the U.S.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Will Moseley takes a more measured approach. \u201cU.S. and China trade is very unique, the traffic being lopsided with imports to the U.S. far outdistancing exports from the U.S. to China. We both need each other and major changes don\u2019t happen in that [partnership] unless duty rates are revised.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As far as Ukraine is concerned, immediate fears following the invasion have subsided. \u201cIt hasn\u2019t affected U.S. trade nearly as much as it has Europe<\/a><\/span>,\u201d observes Ciccarone.<\/span>[\/vc_wp_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″ el_class=”left_cont”][vc_custom_heading text=”What New Technology Will Change the Shipping Industry? ” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Raleway%3A100%2C200%2C300%2Cregular%2C500%2C600%2C700%2C800%2C900|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_wp_text]New technologies are constantly changing the world around us, but the shipping industry is one that is slow to adopt changes. \u201cArtificial Intelligence <\/a><\/span>could be very beneficial to pick-and-pack warehouses, allowing individuals working to handle more complex issues,\u201d says Michelle Rockwell. Artificial intelligence can be used to improve efficiency, but it is still a long way off from taking over the step-by-step process of facilitating and carrying out international freight forwarding without human supervision.<\/span><\/p>\n

Green fuels and technologies are also a ways away. \u201cI do not feel we have the infrastructure in place at this time,\u201d says Rockwell. \u201cIt will take years for the U.S. to put the infrastructure in place that is needed.\u201d We\u2019ll only see green energy used if it \u201ccan be more cost effective than fossil fuels or if it\u2019s mandated by the government,\u201d adds Andrew Ciccarone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re already seeing airlines, in particular, offer \u2018green\u2019 fuel solutions, which add a lot of additional expense,\u201d says Will Moseley. \u201cThe end consumer will see a difference with prices, as the cost of shipping will increase,\u201d Derick Mullikin remarks.
